Aunque los watts se refieren a la potencia eléctrica que consumen los bombillos, se convirtieron en la forma estándar de medir la luminosidad de una lámpara. Por ejemplo, el bombillo de 100 W era más brillante que el de 60 W.
Con el desarrollo de las luces LED se logró producir la misma cantidad de luz usando menos potencia eléctrica. Así por ejemplo, la luz producida un bombillo incandescente de 100 W era igualada por un bombillo LED de tan solo 15 W. Es decir, la tecnología LED es mucho más eficiente! Entonces, ¿cómo se mide la cantidad de luz que produce los bombillos si uno de 100 W incandescente produce lo mismo que uno LED de 15W? Claramente usar watts para medir la luz ya no es práctico. En este contexto se comenzó a usar la medida adecuada para la potencia lumínica: los lúmenes (lm). La siguiente gráfica muestra la equivalencia entre la tecnología LED y la tecnología incandescente para varias potencias eléctricas (W) y sus correspondientes potencias lumínicas (lm).
